The anxiety of a country. The loneliness of a generation.
Pilgrimage is Lu Xun's second collection of short stories, published in 1926. If in Cries the author dissects the malaise of society, here he explores the loss of the modern Chinese soul after the fall of old certainties. Each story is a crossroads, a pause before the abyss, where the characters wander between despair and the longing for a change that never comes.
With even more introspective and bitter prose, Lu Xun portrays the desolation and bewilderment of intellectuals and peasants, young and old, in a nation that has lost its compass. The result is a book of haunting, unsparing stories, often laden with irony and other times with devastating tenderness.
Includes the following stories:
- In the tavern (在酒楼上, Zài Jiǔlóu Shàng)
- The Lady's Uncle (祝福, Zhùfú)
- Divorce (离婚, Líhūn)
- A Spring Night (长明灯, Chángmíng Dēng)
- The Brothers (兄弟, Xiōngdì)
- Return (回家, Huíjiā)
- In Search of Hair (采薇, Cǎiwēi)
- Farewell to Mrs. Xiang Lin (祥林嫂, Xiánglín Sǎo)
- The flare (灯下, Dēngxià)
- A momentary happiness (幸福的家庭, Xìngfú de Jiātíng)
- Potters (孤独者, Gūdúzhě)
- A Dream (梦, Mèng)
